3 Things You Need Right Away

Drivers License; Sydney is still a car society.

Public transport has much improved in recent years but still, it is not like Tokyo where you really don’t miss having a car. Starting a new life means you will require some furniture and white goods, if you can drive yourself it would be much easier. Besides you will find few shops will deliver these things for free and in a timely manner. In fact, places like Ikea almost expect you to come by a car. Don’t forget, drivers license is also one of the most accepted forms of ID. So let’s get a drivers license, a local one. Especially if you already have a license from countries like Japan, France or Italy, you only need to take an eyesight test (not so simple if you have been disqualified in the past. Check with Roads and Maritime Services).

I spent my first 5 years in Sydney without a license. When I was in Tokyo, I never really felt that inconvenienced for not being able to drive but when I finally got a license in Sydney, my life changed dramatically for better. In fact I don’t know how I got by all these years without driving. Not only just convenience, half an hour drive out of Sydney will get you such different and beautiful landscapes. If you want to enjoy Sydney like a local, I would say driving license is a must.

Bank Account; Prepare and save.

There are banks that let you open an account before you leave home. I will tell you why this can save you money. Well traveled and money smart people do not exchange money at airports. They are also careful about using their foreign credit cards. This is because they know they get ripped off with exchange rates and service fees. I have tried transferring money through various methods from major banks to Paypal, and I now use this company called OFX. I rate their service because their fees are reasonable, give good exchange rates, money arrives fast and once set up, fairly easy to use. You can download an app on your phone so very handy.

Internet and mobile phone; Last but not least.

Communication is important. You want to be connected and able to use internet as soon as you arrive in a foreign country. You might use the overseas roaming service from home but in Australia it is fairly easy to get a prepaid SIM, I would forget roaming and start using a local service straight away. The biggest communication provider is Telstra, followed by Vodafone. Telstra tends to charge more but if you need to go out of metropolitan area for work, they give the best coverage. There are other companies that provide communication solutions for short term stayers such as pocket wifi and mobile phone rentals.
